As I mentioned before, I did not have the right ingredients for this pin. That included glue but that didn't matter to me, because I had tape...or so I thought. I could have sworn I packed tape with me, but after tearing apart my room for half an hour looking for this mythical roll of tape, I came up empty handed. Thus-ly, I had to get crafty. For my birthday, I had gotten this kind of crappy top coat that was too thick and kind of sticky. Well, glue is thick and sticky, right? RIGHT? So I used the nail polish as glue. Despite being hella smelly, it worked(ish).
The next problem came when the instructions said to hold the strips into thirds. HA. HAHAHA. Folding paper in a specific style is my weakness. I just folded the strips so they all looked even enough in width.
Next came the weaving! It was not such an epic fail. I wish I had made them a little tighter but it worked. Then I nail polished the corners together and waited for them to dry. Some corners needed a little help staying down, so I put my jar'o'coins on top of them to help.
After the corners were dried I was hit by the struggle bus full force. I had no clue how to incorporate the long strips into the sides. So, I decided to get some assistants, disappointing chips I will not buy again and peanut M&M's which were not a disappointment. Gurl's gotta eat.
In hind site, I should have made the long strips longer and folded them too. Buuuuut the instructions didn't say to, and I didn't think to last night so I tried to weave them in big. One long strip didn't go around the whole thing, and when I tried to incorporate another one, it just didn't. The fact that I also didn't really understand how to weave in the long strips also didn't help, despite reading both blog posts. The thin strips wouldn't stay up, the nail polish was failing, I was frustrated and I needed to get some sleep because I had to get up early to catch my bus.
That there is my finished product. Can you hear it screaming in pain? I can. I put it out of its misery and laid it to rest in my trash can, but it is still watching me with disgust. I may re-visit this with tape and the long strips folded thinly, buuuut it probably won't happen. I'm too lazy and I don't want to fold anymore paper. No mas origami por favor (unless I am told the secret of incorporating the long strips).
Awww, sad! But good for you for giving it a go and I applaud your use of nail polish as glue! :)
ReplyDeleteI asked myself WWTPD when I couldn't find any tape/glue/staples/paperclips/anything that would work good. And my inner The Pintester said use the nail polish.
DeleteI am sorry it didn't work out but--really happy to finally find another fail! My pork situation was VILE I was beginning to think everyone did awesomely at this and I was just inept. :) Woo hoo for being in the spirit of the Pintester!
ReplyDeleteI just tried to comment and it disappeared... but I'll try to paraphrase what I was going to say because I am lazy--
ReplyDeleteSorry your basket didn't work out, but I'm happy I wasn't the only fail! My pork situation was VILE and everyone whose blog I've checked out about the Pintester Challenge has succeeded in recreating the pin.
Three cheers for effing up too! :)
I just saw your pork chops, too bad they didn't work! Your last photo looks really great though. I feel like effing it up makea it seem more Pintester-like.
DeleteOMG, I'm dying over the nail polish as glue, that sounds like something I would do! I was going to do this one, but it looked waaay out of my range of abilities--I managed to mess up an entirely different pin :)
ReplyDeleteI give you an A for effort!
I'm more of a draw-er and cooker than a crafter myself. Buuuut I'm lazy so I just used whatever was closest. I feel like a basket weaving class is needed before doing than pin.
DeleteAt least you tried - great post!
ReplyDeleteI almost want to re-try, because I bought tape last time I went to rite-aid, and I feel like that would yield a better-ish result.
DeleteResourceful!
ReplyDeleteThank you. :)
DeleteDon't feel bad, I can never seem to fold paper the right way either. That made kindergarten a mess for me. Clever use of nail polish.
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks. I don't understand how people can do origami without going crazy.
DeleteGood thinkin' using ratty old nailpolish topcoat! Even if it crapped out on you. Still, that's Pinteste ingenuity.
ReplyDeleteI really tried to channel my inner Sonja whilst doing it.
DeleteI am guilty of using nail polish as glue, as well. I've also used hairspray and melted crayon. Yay improvisation! Even though it doesn't always work.
ReplyDeleteI never even thought of melted crayons as glue. That's really creative. Did you know they can also be used as candles in a pinch?
DeleteA for effort! I did the glass cutting one, and while I did succeed in getting the top off of a beer bottle, I'm not sure I'll be drinking out of the jagged remains... lol!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you actually got it to work! That was pretty impressive, I never thought that pin was do-able, it just seems too simple/dangerous. I hope that you can get it smoothed out so it can be actually used as a glass.
DeleteI have totally used nail polish as glue before! It almost always (ie: never) works! LOL. Good try!
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad I can get rid of my top coat, it is so tacky and gross, but makes for an awkward glue.
DeleteHuh, I've never heard of nail polish as glue before - definitely done in true Pintester spirit, haha.
ReplyDeleteIt was so tacky and thick, I thought why not. Now it is is resting in peace in my garbage since I used most of it up on the pin. >:D
DeleteI'm super impressed you gave this a shot, even though it didnt' work out. I couldn't even do the paper bag book covers!
ReplyDeleteThat's why I used book sox for all my text books, lol. I'm suprised I gave it a shot too, I am not a hands on crafts person.
